[比較] disaster, calamity, catastrophe, cataclysm
disaster는 별의 불길한 배치(a bad configuration of the stars), 즉 불행과 불운(bad luck)이 어원적인 뜻이다.
a railway disaster/ Such a war would be final and supreme disaster to the world./ The failure of the bank was a disaster to the farmers.
the calamity of losing a dear child/ The attack on Pearl Harbor was a calamity.
The rout at Bull Run was a disaster for the North; the assassination of President Lincoln, a calamity.(불런<미 남북전쟁 때의 싸움터>에서의 패전은 북부에게는 재난이었으나, 링컨 대통령의 암살은 참사였다.)
A modern war is a catastrophe.
World War Ⅱ was a cataclysm for all of Europe.

How many times should I tell you? If I've told you once,
I've told you a hundred times!
* 미국 영화의 최고 걸작이라는 Gone With The Wind에서 가장
I don't give a damn이란 말이 나오는데 여주인공 Vivien Leigh가
What should I do?
Frankly, my dear, I don't
I don't give a damn

Joe & Peter
Joe
GI(Government Issue
Jane
Dear John Letter,
Dear Jane Letter
"Peter, You are a rock, and on this rock foundation
I will build my church" Matthew 16:18
rob Peter to pay Paul

John :
John.
I'm keeping up with Johneses. 라고 하면 keep up with는
-
Long John
-
Dear John letter
Dear Jane letter.
She sent me a Dear-John-letter.
-
John Hancock
(the Declaration of Indepedence)에 맨 처음 게다가 대문짝만하게
Put your John Hancock on my guest book.
-
Johnny-on-the-spot
Where is the john?

11. The price of the book is ( high, dear ).=>high
(Note) This hat is dear[cheap].

The talkathon began when Majority Leader Mike Manfield moved
that the Senate take up the repeal bill; Dirksen got the floor and
held on for dear life.

Jack arrived home from work one sunny afternoon.
He noticed a letter on the hall table.
He picked up the letter and opened it.
The letter began:
Dear Jack, Congratulations! You have won an all-expenses-paid 5-day trip to Fiji!
Thank you for entering the competition at Franklin’s Supermarket at Downtown Shopping Center.”
He couldn't believe how lucky he was.
He went into the kitchen and found a bottle of champagne.
He sat back in the sofa and sipped on his glass of champagne.
Then he noticed the date of the trip―March 20th.
Jack screamed with horror.
“I can't believe it! I'm going to kill the mail carrier! They're always late!”
Today was March 21st.
Jack
Jack

Dear Sally,
I'm so excited to hear that you're finally going to visit me here in Seoul.
I've really missed you since I moved away from Australia and I've been waiting for you to come for so long.
I've made an arrangement to take off a couple of weeks from work, so I'll be able to spend a lot of time with you.
Please let me know what you want to do here and I'll prepare everything for it.
You should check out the highlights of Korea online.
If you want to go somewhere outside of Seoul, just let me know and I'll be happy to rent a car.
I hope that I'll be able to do many things with you.
I can't wait to see you.
Bye for now,
Suzanne
Sally

Prayer For Bad Times
Dear God: Help me be a good sport in this game of life.
I don't ask for an easy place in the lineup.
Put me anywhere you need me.
I only ask that I can give you 100 percent of everything I have.
If all the hard drives seem to come my way, I thank you for the compliment.
Help me remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle.
-
And, help me, Lord, to accept the bad breaks as part of the game.
May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do.
Help me study the Book so I'll know the rules.
-
Finally, God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I'm benched for sickness or old age, help me to accept that as part of the game, too.
Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw deal.
And when I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels.
All I want is to believe in my heart that I played as well as I could and that didn't let you down.

When Dad asked Mom where we were staying, she didn't want to upset him, so she said, "We haven't settled on a place, but don't worry, we'll find something soon."
The wife of the patient in the next bed overheard her.
She invited Mom to come out in the hall and said, "I know what the hotel situation is like in this town.
You and your daughter can stay in our spare bedroom as long as you like ―no charge."
We were overwhelmed by her generosity and accepted the invitation at once.
There is no way we can repay that dear woman for her extraordinary kindness.
She will always be in our prayers.

Dear Sons: This is not a request. It is an order.
I have tried to live with dignity and I want to die the same way.
Should I become old and ill and unable to make a rational decision, you are instructed to give the physician orders not to attempt to prolong my life by using extraordinary measures.
I want no surgery, no cobalt, no blood transfusions and no intravenous feedings.
Please see that I get plenty of medication and sedatives.
This letter will relieve you of the burden of making the decision because I have made it.
My thanks and my love, Mother.

Dear Lord, give me the strength this day
To do all the things I must do.

Dear Lord, how do you explain today's crazy economic system to a child?
How do I tell him that Daddy doesn't make enough money to support our family so I have to go to work to help pay the bills?
And Lord, keep me from resenting those who add to my guilt.
By presuming I work because I want to get out of the house.

Dear Readers: These days, when too many of us are rushing around at breakneck speed, putting in long hours and often neglecting the most important people in our lives, we need to step back, reexamine our values and get a better view of the big picture.

The little essay you are about to read was sent to me by a dear friend.

DEAR ABBY: I'm 22, with two children, ages 3 and 4.
I'm divorced for the second time.
I have been dating a man who is 52 years old.
He is financially very well-off and wants to marry me.
He treats me very well and cares for my children.
Abby, do you think marriage between a 52-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman could ever work out?
I like him a lot, but I am not what you would call madly in love with him.
I was madly in love with my first two husbands, and they both treated me like dirt.
I haven't made any promises yet, and this man is not pressuring me, but I need your advice.
What do you think it takes to make a marriage work ?
TWO-TIME LOSER
DEAR T.T.L.: Don't marry anyone while you are still seeking advice.
All that is necessary for a marriage to succeed is for two people to really
need each other.

A mother took her daughter to a great artist to have her portrait painted
and when the work was at length finished they went to see ti. The artist put it before
them and the mother looked at it, her face expressing displeasure, and said not one word.
Nor did the artist open his lips, and at last the girl, to break the uncomfortable
silence, said, "Where shall we hang it, Mother?" And the lady replied,"Just where
you like, my dear, so long as you hang it with the face to the wall."

DEAR ABBY : I'm glad you advised that 15-year-old girl against dating boys
of a different religion if she had no intentions of marrying out of her faith.
I was raised in a strict Baptist home, but dated boys I knew I could not marry. I
fell deeply in love with a Jewish boy, but I married someone else. That was over 30
years ago, and I still dream of my first love. Now I wish I had either married him
or not set myself up to fall in love with a man I could not marry.
I REMEMBER MOREY

A husband and wife sat in front of their fireplace.
She asked, "Can you see figures in the fire?"
"Yes, dear," replied her spouse.
"What kinds of figures?" the wife persisted.
"Forty dollars a cord for the wood," he sighed.

I was sharing a park bench with a middle-aged couple. The wife was engrossed
in one of several books she had with her, while the husband ogled passing
pretty women. "Dear," the wife suggested, offering one of her volumes, "why
don't you read a book and rest your eyes?"

Lunching at a local eatery, I overheard a conversation between a mother
and daughter about plans for a wedding. The young woman protested that
she was the one being married and should be allowed to make the decisions.
"After all, Mother," the bride-to-be said, "you had your wedding 23 years ago."
"No, dear," came the reply. "That was my mother's wedding."

All great books contain boring portions, and all great lives have
contained uninteresting stretches. Imagine a modern publisher confronted
with the Old Testament as a new manuscript submitted to him for the
first time. It is not difficult to think what his comments would be,
for example, on the genealogists.
"Mr. dear sir," he would say, "this chapter lacks pep; you can't expect
your reader to be interested in a mere string of proper names of persons
about whom you tell him so little. You have begun your story, I will
admit, in fine style, and at first I was very favorably impressed, but
you have altogether too much wish to tell it all. Pick out the high
lights, take out the superfluous matter, and bring me back your
manuscript when you have reduced it to a reasonable length."

A young woman who was about to wed decided at the last moment to test her
sweetheart. So, selecting the prettiest girl she knew, she said to her,
though she knew it was a great risk:
"I'll arrange for Jack to take you out tonight walk on the beach in the
moonlight, a lobster supper and all that sort of thing―and I want you,
in order to put his faithfulness to the proof, to ask him for a kiss."
The other girl laughed, blushed and assented. The dangerous plot was
carried out. Then the next day the girl in love visited the pretty one
and said anxiously:
"Well, did you ask him?"
"No, dear."
"No? Why not?"
"I didn't get a chance. He asked me first."

Dear sir,
Application for the post of Personal Secretary I have seen your advertisement for the post of personal secretary (PS68) in today's Daily News.
I am very keen to apply for this position and therefore now have pleasure in enclosing a copy of my curriculum vitae for your consideration.
My main reason for wishing to change my present employment is that I wish to widen my experience and am anxious to work for a firm that is trading with Western Europe.
As you will be able to see from my C.V. , I studied English in London from 1989 to 1992 and so I believe I now have quite a good command of English.
I would also like to add my brother is currently attached to our trade delegation to the European Community in Brussels, and so I feel I am quite familier with the trading situation in Western Europe.
I am able to attend for interview at any time at your convenience, but would be grateful if you would give me two days' notice.
If you decide to appoint me, I must give my present employers one month's notice, but will then be able to take up my duties at once.
I assure you I will always do my best to prove entirely satisfactory.
With all good wishes,
Your faithfully,
Lilian Au Yeung(Miss)

Dear Mr. Ferron :
Thank you for submitting specifications and a cost estimate for the security system work on the Tri-Oaks Building project.
Your references and client list are impressive.
We received over thirty bids for the office building work.
Each bid was carefully reviewed against our budget and the qualifications of the bidder.
Your firm was among the five final contenders we considered.
However, after careful deliberation, we chose Net Security, Inc. for the project.
Their bid was closest to our budget and their experience was in an area that matched our needs.
We appreciate your interest in our project and the time and effort you went to in preparing your bid.
We hope we will have other opportunities to work with you on a future project, as your company has an exceptional reputation in the field.

Dear

DEAR NEIGHBOR: Yours is a *chilling letter. I hope it will

▲ chilling: causing a cold feeling of fear: 냉랭한, 냉담한
▲ heartbreak: deep sorrow or terrible disappointment:

DEAR ABBY: I have carried this *resentment for two years and
would like to ask you if I am right or wrong to feel hurt and
angry. On Thanksgiving 1996, which was our 53rd *anniversary,
my wife and I invited our children and grandchildren and a
few close friends to our home for dinner. We received many
nice gifts from all. Abby, the following day my wife *passed
away. It was *completely unexpected. *Thank goodness all my
family was here.

▲ anniversary: the date occurred in some previous year: 주년

▲ pass away: go out of existence:

One couple, whom my wife and I had known for many years,
immediately asked me to return their gift. I was shocked, but
of course I complied. My children were angry at me for
giving in to their request. Was I wrong to return their
gift? Please don't identify me, as the couple lives *nearby.

the gift, but I think it was wrong of them to have asked you
to do so.

teens in *residential treatment. Many of our teens are making
new choices. Among them is the choice of *chastity until
marriage, even though they may have had sex *prior to the
program. These teens are *glowing and *radiant in their
*newfound personal power. We are helping them learn how to
*heal families and meet new challenges in their lives.
▲ participate: take part in something: 참여하다.
▲ chastity: state of keeping away from all sexual life;정숙, 순결
▲ prior to: before: 보다 전에.
▲ glow: to shine with a soft, steady light : 반짝이다.
▲ radiant: very bright: 빛나는.
▲ heal: get healthy again;

DEAR ANONYMOUS: Yes, indeed. A white wedding gown *signifies
a first-time bride, not chastity. And *these days, the old
"rules" have been *relaxed so that a bride may wear
whatever color she chooses, whether it's her first, second or
*subsequent marriage.
▲ signify: to show by a sign:
▲ these days: at the present day: 요즈음.
▲ relax: ease; lessen in tension: 마음을 풀다.
▲ subsequent: following after: 다음의, 그 이후의

DEAR ABBY: This is in response to "Hurt Bride in Texas," who
was upset because her future *sister-in-law "selfishly"
became *pregnant after agreeing to be a *bridesmaid in her wedding.
▲ sister-in-law: the sister of one's husband or wife.
▲ pregnant: having an unborn child in the body: 임신한.
▲ bridesmaid: a maid of honor: 신부 들러리

DEAR MATURE: Your *priorities are *well-placed. I was
surprised at the number of responses the letter from "Hurt
Bride" *generated. Read on.
▲ priority: the state, quality, position, of being first in
▲ generate: to cause to exist; to produce: 야기하다.
"Hurt Bride"
DEAR ABBY: That bride-to-be has to be the most selfish,
self-centered person I ever heard of. Why can't she be happy
for "Sue"? I *suspect her real concern is that Sue might
steal the *limelight on her "big day."
▲ suspect: to believe to exist or be true; ~이 아닌가 의심하다.
▲ limelight: the center of public attention: 각광, 주목

Personally, I think "Sue" should *gracefully *bow out of the
actual *ceremony, because chances are she won't feel like
standing up in front of the church for an hour. When I was
eight months pregnant, I was maid of honor in a wedding _ and
I *fainted. Talk about causing a *distraction! Thankfully, my
best friend was kindhearted, and didn't write to Dear Abby
complaining that I'd ruined her wedding. KATHY PHILLIPS
JOSHUA, TEXAS
▲ bow out of something: 사퇴하다.
▲ ceremony: a special formal, solemn, and well-established action: 의식
▲ faint: to suddenly become unconscious for a short time:

DEAR ABBY: My wife, "Beth," and I are being divorced, and
until recently, things were *cordial and polite. At first,
she was going to remain here in Oregon and allow me
*convenient access to our daughter, Cathy, who is 6 years old.
▲cordial: warmly friendly: 따뜻한, 친절한
▲convenient: suited to one's comfort or ease: 편리한

DEAR HEARTBROKEN: Your soon-to-be-ex-wife has *legitimate
reasons for moving to Florida, and your daughter is at an age
when she still needs her mother, so let her go without an
ugly fight. I think your idea of eventually relocating to
Florida in order to be near Cathy has *merit.
▲legitimate: lawful or correct, reasonable: 옳은, 정당한.

DEAR ABBY: I just *roared at the letter from "Turkeyless in
Arkansas." I couldn't stop laughing, so I sat down and wrote
my own version _ from a woman's *point of view. It's titled,
"Men Are From the Forest; Women Are From the Mall." Hope you
enjoy it. ANN IN MANZANITA, ORE.

DEAR ANN: Not only did I enjoy it, so will my readers. Read on:
DEAR ABBY: I have the most handsome boyfriend in the world _
and the nicest, I thought, until I realized that "Ben" does
not understand or respect my favorite activity: shopping.

This is Abby again. I couldn't resist writing an answer.
DEAR PURCHASELESS: If you've been buying what Ben has been
"selling" _ how can you call yourself "purchaseless"?
