As the population of Curitiba grew fast, it needed a mass-trans system but couldn't afford an expensive subway.
City planners began, instead, with an unusual system of buses in the center lanes of five wide major streets.
At each bus stop, there is a forty-foot-long glass tube.
Passengers pay before they enter the tube.
Then they get on the bus “subway style”―through wide doors.
This allows people to get on and off the bus quickly and efficiently.
People don't crowd onto the bus; loading and unloading takes only thirty seconds.
This makes commuting more pleasant.

We are all very glad that the new train line has opened to take people to Euro-Disney.
However, I must report that the trains are very crowded and uncomfortable.
This is especially true at the busiest times when many people are trying to get to work.
In order to attract more visitors to the park, we must put more trains in service during peak hours.
There are also many tourists who do not speak French; therefore, we need train employees who speak English and other languages.
If we do this, I'm sure more visitors will come to Euro-Disney in comfort and safety.

When dealing with a scapegoat, it’s important not to play both sides of the fence, being compassionate to those who are being isolated while giving support and approval to the bullies who are tormenting them.
Let the bullies know how angry you are about what they are doing.

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and the hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

My family and I lived in an apartment until last spring.
We weren't happy there because the building was crowded and noisy.
We decided to move.
Finally, my husband and I found a small house in a neighborhood that wasn't bad.
The problem was the house itself.
The wallpaper was horrible; there were scenes of hunting all over the bedroom walls!
The porch and roof needed repairs.
The garden consisted of weeds, and a few half-dead plants with insects all over them.
When our kids first saw their new home, they burst into tears.
I understood that.
I wanted to cry, too.

To converse well, either with another person or with a crowd, it is vitally necessary to feel relaxed and comfortably at ease.
Many intelligent people have thought themselves slow and dull because they could not produce witty remarks in rapid succession as their companions seemed able to do.
This is often because of a pang of embarrassment or self-consciousness, which is akin to stage fright.
Feeling a little uncomfortable and ill at ease in the presence of others, one finds his mind won't work right.
It simply refuses to come up with the bright remark or the lively comeback that would have found so beautiful a place in the conversation.

Class can "walk with kings and keep its value and talk with crowds and keep the common touch." Everyone is comfortable with the person who has class because that person is comfortable with himself.

crush: a crowded mass
overexuberant: overexcited.

In an epoch when colorful volumes crowd each other out in bookshops, the
black-and white book is more than refreshing; it is a revelation.

She pushed her way through the crowd.

He elbowed his way through the crowd.

They shot their way through the crowd.

*sweep 휩쓸다 carry along quickly and powerfully:
We were swept along by the crowd.

One of the greatest dangers of living in large towns is that we have too
many neighbors and human fellowship is too cheap. We are apt to become
wearied of humanity; a solitary green tree sometimes seems dearer to us
than an odd thousand of our fellow citizens. Unless we are hardened,
the millions of eyes begin to madden us; and for ever pushed and jostled
by crowds we begin to take more kindly to Malthus, and are even willing
to think better of Herod and other wholesale depopulators.

We were jostled by the crowd.

During my lunch hour, I made a purchase at a crowded bookstore and decided
to charge it. The two clerks were harried, and my transaction was traded
from one woman to another.
When I got outside, I noticed I had both the customer and merchant copies
of the charge form. I thought to myself that I'd just gotten a free book.
But by the time I sat down at my desk, my conscience was bothering me,
and I reached for the phone. When a clerk answered, I explained the
situation and told her I'd return their copy after work.
"Thank you," the woman replied. "I'm glad you called. You left your
charge card on the counter."

How much living space does a person need? What happens when these space
requirements are not adequately met? Sociologists and psychologists are
conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effects of
overcrowding on humans.
Recent studies have shown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected
by space. If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well,
and reproduce well. But if their living conditions become too crowded,
their behavior patterns and even their health change perceptibly. They
cannot sleep and eat well and signs of fear and tension become obvious.
The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and
even kill each other. Thus, for rats, population and violence are
directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well?

While on an auto trip we stopped for lunch at a crowded cafe. A man,
whom the waitress apparently knew, walked in and sat in a booth where
the dirty dishes had not been removed. Upon seeing him, the waitress
shouted, "You would have to take the one table that hasn't been
cleared!"
Replied the man, "I just wanted to feel at home."

In no other town than London is it so important, nay, essential, to have
good friends because practically everything that constitutes the charm
of London life takes place behind closed doors, either of clubs or private
houses; nowhere does social life count for so little. The Englishman is
unwilling to exhibit himself in public and still more so to mix with a
crowd of strangers.
The function of the London street is simply to contain the traffic,
which is dense that its stream sweeps the individual along with it.

*dense 무성한; 가득 찬 crowded together in great numbers:
The garden was dense with grass.

The actor is at the mercy of fortune and the inconstant favor of the
public.
He is forgotten as soon as he ceases to please.
Then it will avail him nothing to have been the idol of the crowd.
It is when I think of this that I find it easy to be indulgent to the
actor's airs and graces, or his vanity, when he is on the crest
of the wave.
Let him be showy and absurd if he likes.
It all lasts such a little while.
And after all his egotism is part of his talent.

*orderly 질서정연한 peaceful and well-behaved:

She addressed her remarks particularly to the young people in the crowd.

agitate V. to stir into an irregular action.
The speaker agitated the crowd to riot, appealing to base emotions.

alcove N. a recess in a wall, which expands a room's size.

anoesis N. frame of mind of all emotion lacking any reasoning.
The frenzied crowd in anoesis turned to looting the city instead of dealing with the problem in a more sensible manner.

Imagine a typical tourist who goes to another country on a group tour.
He probably travels at a peak time when the airports are crowded and
unpleasant. His charter flight will be delayed a few hours. Besides, the
only local people he will meet are the overworked waiters and hotel staff
who will be only too happy to perform for the tourist. He will return
home with little or no new insights into another culture.

Crowding stresses us. The more crowded we feel, the more stressed we
get. Work stresses us, too. Workers in manufacturing jobs are likely to
suffer serious health problems as a result of the noise, or the stress of
being paced by mechanical requirements of the assembly line. The amount
of work involved, however, does not necessarily determine the level of
stress. Air traffic controllers, for instance, report that the long
stretches of doing relatively little are at least as stressful as the
times when they are handling many aircraft in the sky.

Everything depended on my final arrow. Still, my rival looked calm. For a
moment, I dreamed I would go home with a gold medal. I approached the
shooting line, remembering all the hard training I had gone through.
Suddenly, I felt my heart beating faster. But I slowly aimed at the
target. Shortly after my arrow began to fly, I heard the crowd cheering.
When I looked at the target, I could not believe my eyes. My arrow hit
the very center of the yellow circle. Then I heard my teammates shouting,
"You did it!"

For every plus, however, there is a minus. For one thing, you might
have a job, but unless it is very well-paid, you will not be able to
afford many things because living in a city is often very expensive. What
is more, public transportation is sometimes crowded and dirty,
particularly in the rush hour. Last of all, despite all the crowds, it is
still possible to feel very lonely in a city.

But clean air is not the only reason. People can set up a tent in the
middle of the smell of wild flowers and trees. They can enjoy being alone
in the mountains, forgetting completely about the everyday cares of the
world. They are entirely free to talk among themselves, occasionally
entertained by the sweet sounds of trees and small animals. They don't
have to be bothered by noisy crowds that disturb their peace of mind.
These are other reasons why people like to go to the mountains.

▦ KILLING ME SOFTLY WITH HIS SONG ▦
- Roberta Flack
I felt all flushed with fever
Emabarrased by the crowd
I felt he found my letters
And read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish
But he just kept right on
-
Strumming my pain with his fingers
Singing my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

Korea's rapid economic development over the past couple of decades has changed the country in many ways.
The physical changes are the most obvious
―the neon signs, the glass tower skyscrapers and clean wide tree-lined boulevards, the modern hi-rise condominium complexes and crowded express ways.

The great cities have been built with no regard for us. The shape and
dimensions of the skyscrapers depend entirely on the necessity of
obtaining the maximum income per square foot of ground, and of offering
to the tenants offices and apartments that please them. This caused the
construction of gigantic buildings where too large masses of human
beings are crowded together. Civilized men like such a way of living.
While they enjoy the comfort and banal luxury of their dwelling, they do
not realize that they are deprived of the necessities of life.

The modern city consists of monstrous edifices and of dark, narrow
streets full of petrol fumes, coal dust, and toxic gases, torn by the
noise of the taxi-cabs, lorries and buses, and thronged ceaselessly by
great crowds. Obviously, it has not been planned for the good of its
inhabitants.

Probably the most famous film commenting on 20th century technology is
Modern Times, made in 1936. Charlie Chaplin was motivated to make the
film by a reporter who, while interviewing him, happened to describe
working conditions in industrial Detroit. Chaplin was told that healthy
young farm boys were lured to the city to work on automotive assembly
lines. Within 4 or 5 years, these young men's health was destroyed by
the stress of work in the factories. The film opens with a shot of a
mass of sheep making their way
down a crowded ramp. Abruptly the scene shifts to a scene of factory
workers jostling one another on their way to a factory. However, the
rather bitter note of criticism in the implied comparison is not
sustained. It is replaced by a gentler note of satire.
