The deforestation rate in Brazil's Amazon, the world's largest jungle, has jumped 40 percent,
sparking alarm among environmentalists to launch emergency measures.
Most of the desforestation takes place due to burning and logging to create farms,
but the jump in 2002 suggests soy farming is growing rapidly in the area.
Brazil is expected to overtake U.S.
soy production in a few years, making it the world's No.
1 producer of a crop that offers large profits for farmers and gives a sizable boost to Brazil's trade accounts.

If all spiders suddenly disappeared, we'd starve to death.
As soon as the canned and frozen foods were used up, there would be no more food.
The millions and millions of insects that live on earth would eat all the crops.
With no spiders, the bugs cannot be stopped.
That's what spiders do for us, though we do not always appreciate it.
They eat bugs day and night.
They have eaten a total number of bugs weighing more than several billion people on earth today.
There are too many spiders to count.

The pyramids and other tombs were built on the west bank of the Nile River.
The Egyptians chose the west bank as the “land of the dead” because that was where the dying sun disappeared each evening.
The building of the pyramids was generally started during the dry season of May and June.
The crops of the year before had been harvested.
The farmers had no work to do in the fields.
The farmers became pyramid builders.
They were paid for their labor in food and clothing.

In 1988, the United States suffered one of the worst droughts in history.
As weeks went by without rain, crops died and river levels fell.
Conditions were so bad that ships were unable to travel on the Mississippi River.
As the water levels fell, the remains of old boats ― Civil War gunboats, barges, and even a steamboat ― were disclosed!
In some places the once-sunken boats were left high and dry, and archeologists could walk right up to them.
By studying the boats, these scientists were able to learn a great deal about day-to-day life on the barges and steamboats of the past.

With the global population expected to rise to 9 billion within 50 years, GM technology is giving hope to people around the world.
They think GM crops can offer bigger harvests, better quality, and less need for spraying poisons to kill insects.
Not surprisingly, the use of GM seeds has quickly become popular among farmers.
More than fifty percent of all crops planted in the U.S.
are from GM seeds, including tomatoes, corn, and potatoes.
* GM(genetically modified): 유전자 조작의

Yet in spite of the advantages mentioned above, the use of GM crops is causing debates among scientists.
Research has discovered that GM crops were harming butterflies, and also that GM food slowed growth and increased disease in rats.
Resistance to GM foods around the world is growing.

In July 2001, the European Union passed a law requiring all food products from GM crops to be clearly marked.
Many countries have stopped further planting until there are more health checks.
Moreover, public concern is so great in some countries that food companies are ending the use of GM crops altogether.
So, people around the world are starting to ask the question: Just how safe are these new “designer” foods?

Ice sometimes can protect crops.
Some growers actually spray their crops with water on a freezing night.
Water freezes quickly on the plants―and then a strange thing happens.
As long as ice stays wet, it cannot get colder than 0℃, a temperature many plants can stand.
If the ice ever became entirely frozen and dry, it might drop many degrees lower, ruining the plants.
But by continually spraying water on the ice, the growers keep it from going below 0℃, saving the plants.
This strange kind of “ice blanket” works only on plants that are strong enough to stand the weight of frozen spray.

The combine relieved farmers of much of the burden of harvest.
It enabled farmers to rescue crops which otherwise might have been lost.
The combine was first developed for use in countries where the climate was suitable for grain production.
It was said that the climate in such countries as the British Isles was totally unsuitable for its use.
However, this was not true.
Combines work in quite damp conditions.
The use of a combine resulted in a big reduction in the time and labor required to harvest a given crop
because only one or, at the most, two men were needed to operate the machine.
Other labor required to transport the grain to storage was not excessive.

People need water to survive, so naturally, the earliest civilizations were established on the banks of rivers.
The four major cradles of civilization were the Egyptian, on the Nile;
the Sumerian, between the Tigris and Euphrates;
the Indus Valley civilization in what is now Pakistan;
and the Chinese, on the Huang He.
The most important role of these rivers was in agriculture
because it was the ability to grow crops that allowed people to settle in one place.
Most of the world's major cities still lie on the banks of rivers.

In parts of Africa the farmers cut down trees and bushes so that they can till the land.
When the soil is exhausted they move on.
Most old fields can be re-cultivated after a period of rest.
Early farmers in Europe did the same.
When there was not enough unused woodland left they used a third of their fields for pasture, letting the animal manure fertilize the soil before the next tilling.
Then it was discovered that plants like clover and beans enrich the soil, so that they can be used every year.
Later, minerals were added to the soil to replace those used up by the crops.
Modern farming uses many chemicals, which must, however, be tested to see that they do not affect human and animal health.

In most rice-growing regions the rainfall does not provide sufficient moisture for the crop.

Corn is the most important of all American crops, and annually the corn crop
is greater than the combined production of wheat, oats, barley, rye, rice and
buchwheat.

Because a large proportion of land in Hawaii is rugged and
mountainous, the state has little space in which to 'grow crops'.
Some areas are also covered with hard, black lava on which nothing
can 'grow'. Even so, hawaii produces large quantities of farm
products.

The volcanic soil in the valleys and lowlands is very fertile,
and the warm climate makes it possible to 'grow crops' all
year long.

Much of the land of the southern and western sides of each island
receives too little rainfall for most 'crops to grow' well, but
in many of the places where rainfall is light, wells and
mountain streams supply water for irrigation.

agronomist N. one who studies soil management and crop production.
The agronomist recommended a treatment program for their lawn.

The farmer cultivates a variety of crops.

Crops are dependent upon the weather.

The price of the crops is less than that of last year.

All the crops may be ruined if we do not have rain in time.

Farming began about 12,000 years ago and it has developed very quickly in
the last 300 years. There are no signs that the speed of development will
slow down. Agriculture will continue to develop in three main ways.
First, farming will become even more efficient by using new types of
technology. Many processes will be controlled by computers. Second, new
ways of growing, storing and selling crops will be developed which can be
used by poor people as well as rich people. Third, agricultural products
will be used in many ways.

In recent years, Colombia has not received much money from its
exports. Its major export crop is coffee but the demand for coffee in the
world has dropped. Also, other countries have begun to export more
coffee, so the price has fallen. Finally, the Colombian government has
encouraged the farmers to produce more food so that the country can
become self-sufficient in food ; as a result, the farmers have produced
less coffee. Because of these factors, Colombia now gets much less cash
from coffee exports than it did ten years ago.

We eat many foods in order to live and grow. We eat grains, vegetables,
fruits, nuts, meat, and fish. We are so accustomed to a varied diet that
we usually take it for granted that other people also have a variety of
foods. Many things determine what foods people eat. Climate plays a part.
So does soil. In addition, there are many other factors which play their
part, such as the amount of money and crop land available.

An old Greek myth tells the story of a farmer. The farmer sowed seeds
and reaped what he sowed. But he was not content with his own crops, and
he stole crops from nearby farmers. The Greek god, zeus, was very angry
at this. So he turned the farmer into an ant. However, the farmer's
character remained the same. Like the farmer, the ant still went from
field to field, storing up food for itself.

October 8, 1997: September 1997 marked the tenth anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the stratospheric Ozone Layer.
The ozone layer serves as Earth‘s shield from the Sun's longer wave-length UV radiation, or ultraviolet-B.
Ultraviolet-B is known to depress crop and forest growth, is a probable cause of skin cancer in humans, and is believed to affect the health and even the viability of a wide range of organisms and ecosystems.

He focused on diarrhea, because, says Arntzen, “diarrheal diseases kill at least 2 million people in the world every year, most of them children.”
And he chose tomatoes because greenhouse-grown tomatoes can't easily pass their altered genes to other crops and because tomato-processing equipment is relatively cheap.

It would be easier still just to take whole tomatoes and eat them, but that could be a disaster, says Arntzen.

You are aware that the enzyme hunters have been replaced by a new breed
of hunters who are tracking genes ― the blueprints for each of the
enzymes ― and are discovering the defective genes that cause inherited
diseases ― diabetes, cystic fibrosis. These gene hunters, or genetic
engineers, use recombinant DNA technology to identify and clone genes
and introduce them into bacterial cells and plants to create factories
for the massive production of hormones and vaccines for medicine and for
better crops for agriculture. Biotechnology has become a
multibillion-dollar industry.

Under such conditions, Mandan women had to grow maize capable of
weathering adversity. They began as early as it appeared feasible to do
so in the spring, clearing the land, using fire to clear stubble from
the fields and then planting. From this point until the first green corn
could be harvested, the crop required labor and vigilance.

Harvesting proceeded in two stages. In August the Mandans picked a
smaller amount of the crop before it had matured fully. This green corn
was boiled, dried, and shelled, with some of the maize slated for
immediate consumption and the rest stored in animal-skin bags.

Later in the fall, the people picked the rest of the corn. They saved
the best of the harvest for seeds or for trade, with the remainder eaten
right away or stored for later use in underground reserves. With
appropriate banking of the extra food, the Mandans protected themselves
against the disaster of crop failure and accompanying hunger.

The women planted another staple, squash, about the first of June, and
harvested it near the time of the green corn harvest. After they picked
it, they sliced it, dried it, and strung the slices before they stored
them. Once again, they saved the seed from the best of the year's crop.
The Mandans also grew sunflowers and tobacco ; the latter was the
particular task of the older men.

Companies engaged in intensive timber cropping naturally take a dim view
of alders suppressing more valuable evergreen trees. But times are
changing; a new generation of foresters seems better prepared to include
in their management plans consideration of the vital ecological role
alders play.

In the 1500's when the Spanish moved into what later was to become the
southwestern United States, they encountered the ancestors of the
modern-day Pueblo, Hopi, and Zuni peoples. These ancestors, known
variously as the Basket Makers, the Anasazi, or the Ancient Ones, had
lived in the area for at least 2,000 years. They were an advanced
agricultural people who used irrigation to help grow their crops.

The sacred objects of the family were under the control of the oldest
female, but the actual ceremonies were conducted by her brother or son.
Women owned the rooms in the pueblo and the crops, once they were
harvested. While still growing, crops belonged to the men who, in
contrast to most other Native American groups, planted them. The women
made baskets and pottery; the men wove textiles and crafted turquoise
jewelry.

Barbed wire, first patented in the United States in 1867, played an
important part in the development of American farming, as it enabled the
settlers to make effective fencing to enclose their land and keep cattle
away from their crops. This had a considerable effect on cattle
ranching, since the herds no longer had unrestricted use of the plains
for grazing, and the fencing led to conflict between the farmers and the
cattle ranchers.

During the last century, over a million people left Ireland to live in
Canada and the United States. They left not because of religious or
political persecution. They left because of an enemy that had taken
their only food from them. Ireland in the nineteenth century was a
desperately poor country. Many people had almost nothing to eat except
potatoes. In 1845, a disease known as the potato blight attacked and
killed the entire potato crop. Soon after the crop failed, people began
to die- some from starvation, others from diseases that attacked them in
their weakened condition. The British government provide some food for
the starving, but not enough to end the famine.

The long summers and plentiful rainfall in Georgia are favorable for a
wide variety of crops.

Because a large proportion of the land in Hawaii is rugged and mountanous, the
state has little space in which to grow crops.

me areas are also covered with
hard, black lava on which nothing can grow. Even so, Hawaii produces large
quantities of farm products. The volcanic soil in the valleys and lowlands is
very fertile, and the warm climate makes it possible to grow crops all year
long.

Rainfall is plentiful on the northern and eastern sides of each island.
Much of the land of the southern and western sides of each island receives too
little rainfall fro most crops to grow well, but in many of the places where
rainfall is light, wells and mountains streams supply water for irrigation.

Throughout the centuries, people have tried to kill off rats because rats carry deadly diseases, damage crops, and destroy stored foods.

Then their corn crops would grow, and they would be able to survive.
In southern Nigeria, young men took part in wrestling matches, and they also believed that their games could magically influence the growth of their crops.
