실현되지 못하고 만 '소망'이나 '의도'는 hoped(intended, wanted)+to have+p.p로도 나타낸다. ex) 그는 당신을 만나기를 바랬었어요(끝내 만나지 못했다는 뜻으로): He had hoped to see you.=He hoped to have seen you.
I had given weekly lectures.
I had my own personal reason.
(ANS) Last April I intended to go to Chunchon, but the trip did not materialize after all. I had wanted to visit the Sacred Heart Women's College in that city, where I had given weekly lectures one fall semester. The weekly trip to Chunchon was tiring, but I had taken the job out of courtesy, because I could not decline the honor when Sisters Choo and Kim had taken the trouble to come to see me. Besides I had my own personal reason.

It was not until the early 1960s…
Korea saw the situation of the teaching of English at schools in some order.
→ 어학실을 설치하다: install a language laboratory
→ the audio-lingual method를 주창하다: advocate the audio-lingual method
(ANS) It was not until the early 1960s that Korea saw the situation of the teaching of English at school in some order. It was then that college teachers began to be sent abroad to study the teaching of English, language laboratories were set up one after another in high schools and colleges, the audio-lingual method was advocated, and language research institutes were set up in many universities.

Whether an university is good or bad; the superiority and inferiority of a college.
(ANS) Whether a college is good or bad depends not only on the ability of the teachers and students there, but (also) on the quality and size of the library.

→ 「내가 다니는 대학교」는 my university, the university where I study
→ 「한국 수준으로」-by Korean standards
→ 「꽤」-rather; somewhat; fairly
It has a student body of more than ten thousand
→ 「교수」-a faculty, faculty members
→ 「직원」=「사무직원」-an administrative staff, staff members
(ANS) My university is fairly large by Korean standards. It has a student body of more than 10,000, a faculty of some 1,000 and an administrative staff of some 500. Beside, it has two campuses, fifteen colleges, ten research institutes and two high schools.

→ (A) (too) (long) holiday
She was reluctant to go to college.
(ANS) Too long a holiday makes one reluctant to start work again.

→ 전문 서적: a technical book.
→ 팔에 낀: under her arm 또는 have a book under her arm.
(ANS) There was a female college student with technical books under her arm standing on the platform.

ex) His defective hearing proved a severe impediment in his college work.

[比較] pupil, student, scholar, disciple
The teacher found her pupils exceedingly restless that day./ She has ten pupils to whom she gives instruction in music.
the number of students in the college/ a college student/ student life
I have been a student of Western European politics ever since I visited France in 1944.
The school has five hundred scholars.

[比較] surprise, astonish, amaze, astound, startle, dumfound, flabbergast
I'm surprised at your concern. 이것은 비교적 새로운 뜻이고, 본래의 옛 뜻은 '놀라도록 불시에 습격하다‘(come upon another suddenly and with starting effect), ’방심하고 있는 틈을 타서 치다’. Her friends planned to surprise her on her birthday with a gift. Their gift greatly surprised and pleased her.
He astonished many people by failing in college work after getting high grades in high school./ I am astonished to see him there.
New scientific discoveries constantly amaze us./ I was amazed at the news.
I was astounded by his proposal.
He was startled by a loud noise.
be dumfounded at the discovery
They were flabbergasted by this involuntary outbreak.

[比較] tell, inform, advise, acquaint, apprise, notify
Her letter informed us how and when she expected to arrive.
Were you not informed of these things?
I hope you that this was their final notice./ He acquainted us with his plans.
He had not been apprised of the shift in foreign policy.
The college notified hi

[比較] till, until
A son's a son till he takes a wife처럼 할 수도 있다.
Until he went to college, he never had thought of his speech./ He had never thought of his speech till(or until) he went to college.
Wait till the rain has stopped라고도 할 수 있다. He waited till the rain stopped 또는 He waited till the rain had stopped라고 할 수 있다. till(또는 until)은 He did not learn of it till the next day(다음 날에 가서야 그 일을 알았다)에서처럼 부정적 구문에 쓰이기도 한다. 이 구문에서 계속되는 것은 부정의 상태 즉, he did not learn이다. It was not long till we realized(오래지 않아 우리는 깨달았다) 같은 글은 이렇게 설명할 수 없다. 여기서 주절 it was not long은 계속하는 것으로 생각되는 문장을 만들지 못한다. She can't go till she finishes her work와 Until injustice is ended, peace will never be realized 같은 글에서는 till, until의 용법은 표준적이지만 다음과 같은 구문에서 till, until의 사용은 가끔 나타나는 수는 있어도 격식 차리는 글에서는 before, when을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
It was not long before he noticed the change.(이윽고 그 변화가 그의 눈에 띄었다.)/ She had scarcely arrived when it began to storm.

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.

After six months, I couldn't see the value in it.
I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out.
And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.

Let me give you one example:
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country.
Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.

And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography.
If I had never dropped in on that single course in college,
the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.
And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them.

Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college.
But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

A : You know who I ran into yesterday?
B : who?
A : Yoon Sunjung, From back in college.
B : It's a small world!
To run into him here in Korea must have been amazing!
A : He's teaching in Pusan.
He was up here on business.
B : We'll have to get together with him
next time we're in Pusan.

Competitiveness of Education :
The government is making it easier to establish colleges. The policy
shift will enable colleges to be set up in buildings with no outside
areas. Colleges with only 200 students will be possible. Also expected
are colleges or graduate schools specializing in just one field like design,
fashion and computing.

Under the plan, aspiring students will be offered a wide variety of
choices as numerous new institutions are expected to spring up. In
coming years, colleges will fiercely compete to attract students, in
marked contrast to the current situation, where student struggles with
student to enter the limited number of schools.

Yet there are risks. Hectic competition among colleges could enhance
the quality of education in general but it could also encourage the
emergence of schools seeking only commercial gains. What in effect
these schools will be doing is just selling diplomas. It will be the duties
of the education authorities to protect students from dishonest institutions
trying to take advantage of eased regulations.

The information society now upon us requires a high degree of skill
and expertise. One secures his or her social position with this personal
asset, not with diplomas. Accordingly students will have to select
astutely the colleges that best suit their visions and their talents.

If they fail to do this, they will find it increasingly difficult to
survive, especially as the number of students entering college is soon
expected to start decreasing. The education liberalization scheme, with its
spurring of lethargic school foundations to expand their investment in
education, a sort of service industry, is thus a good idea.

Frankly, Korean colleges and universities have been not very interested
in upgrading their educational standards. Their focus has been placed on
recruiting as many students as they can, rather than in improving the
conditions of education they provide for the students they have. In a
sense, this has been possible because of the vast demand for tertiary
education under Korea's peculiar social convention.

But now domestic schools will have to start offering students ``more
bang for their buck,'' as supply will be drastically increased with
foreign schools participating in the competition for students. At any rate,
with the wider opening of college doors, student aspirants will have a
wider choice of high-standard schools in the near future.

With the police crackdown on student protesters at Yonsei providing
momentum, the government should now move to dismantle
Hanchongnyon and other pro-Pyongyang organizations, as it promised.
Also in order are long-range steps to prevent college campuses from
becoming "hotbeds" for leftist elements.

Kim called on educators to deal with problematic students with
greater courage and to sternly reprimand them for their misconduct

were urged to strictly enforce academic rules and to stop giving

[Q] 'deans list'

* college와 university의 차이점은?
school of management : 경영대학
school of education : 사범대학

【2】 hard to swallow :

The job of reporting car crashes or other emergencies is usually given to new journalists after they finish college.
However, because most people do not have much experience of seeing terrible accidents,
these young reporters may have a strong emotional reaction to what they see.
This emotional reaction goes against what journalists are taught in school.
They are taught to report the news objectively.

The boomerang, a light, thin, and well-balanced missile, was the very first Australian invention.
It could be thrown into the air to imitate a hawk, causing birds to get frightened and fly into nets where they were caught.
However, boomerangs were mostly used in competitions between native tribes.
The idea was to see who could make the boomerang do the most circles in flight before it returned to the thrower's feet.
Today the boomerang is used by college lecturers to demonstrate the principles of aerodynamics.

Question : What do you do to keep yourself physically fit?
Tom : When I was in college I used to play sports like baseball and basketball.
But I can't do that now, so I try to play golf every weekend.
I work mostly sitting at my desk in my office, so I like to get outside and get some fresh air.
Sue :When the weather is OK, I go jogging in the early morning almost every day.
It's fun and it makes me feel fresh all day.
In the winter I don't feel safe running in the dark, so I usually jump rope and lift weights before breakfast.
Liz :I have no weight problem, but I'm not as strong as I used to be.
I'm worried about my health, to tell the truth.
Last summer I quit smoking and next month I'm going to buy an exercise machine.
I'm looking forward to that.

Suddenly compact discs with titles such as “The Mozart Effect” and “Baroque for Baby” began appearing in stores.
Many parents seemed to believe that if their babies heard Mozart's music, their IQs might increase.
It was called “The Mozart Effect.” But there is no evidence that playing Mozart to babies will raise their IQs.
The original study in 1993 showed only that spatial-temporal abilities of college students who participated in the experiment temporarily increased.
And no one else has been able to show the same result.
Even the researchers who performed the study never claimed it would increase a baby's IQ.
If you want to buy “The Mozart Effect” CDs, just go ahead.
But it is foolish to expect “The Mozart Effect” to be real.
갑자기 “The Mozart Effect”나 “Baroque for Baby” 라는 이름의 음반들이 상점에 등장하고 있다.

The first year of my college was terrible for me.
I didn't know how to handle myself.
I had a growing fear that I might flunk out.
The turnaround came one day during my second semester, on a day when my English professor was returning some essay papers to the class.
She held mine up, and I could see all the red marks and comments she had put on it.
I thought, “Oh, what is she going to do? Criticize my work in front of all these other students?”
Instead, she said, “Your grammar and spelling need a lot of work, Arthur, but this is an example of a very well-organized paper.”
Surely she had no idea what she had done for me.
She had blessed me with an affirmation.
She had shown me I could do something.

Students in harambee schools are aware that they are not getting as good an education as those who attend more expensive schools.
Only two harambee students in 1,000 will attend a university.
Why then do so many students continue to flock to harambee schools?
They point out that if they did not go, they would have no chance at all of going to college.
They enthusiastically tell visitors, “Yes, the chances are slim, but I think that I can succeed.”

It is a great honor for me to present a woman who I'm sure many of you have admired over the years.
She began her impressive work at Clark College.
There she majored in biology and graduated at the top of her class.
From there she went on to Adams Medical School, one of the finest medical research institutions in the nation,
where she first began to show an interest in genetic technology.
After graduating from Adams, again with honors, she continued to work in the field of genetics at the advanced think tank.
You will not find a finer research doctor anywhere in the world.
So, without any further delay, it is my pleasure to present Dr.
Brenda Walsh.

College is totally different from high school because you are on your own.
I cannot stress too much about the idea of learning independence.
You discover so much about yourself in college.
There is no one to walk you to class.
You need to motivate yourself because there is no one to make you do your schoolwork, set your schedule, or get to class on time.
You gain a better sense of self and find yourself maturing when you are away from home.

If your job requires you to be on your feet in one spot all day
―in front of a sales counter, for example―chances are you've complained that your feet are tired and achy.
" Standing in one place all the time is one of the worst things you can do to your feet,"
says Frank Myers, Doctor of Ohio University's College of Medicine in Athens, Ohio.
"The muscles don't flex or contract; they are just static."
One solution is to step on and off a raised surface, such as a telephone book, to give your muscles some work.
Or take your shoes off and roll a golf ball behind the ball of each foot for a minute or two.

Today my teen-age son, my mother-in-law and I were seated in a restaurant enjoying our noon meal.
We heard a beautiful resonant voice reading aloud in the booth next to ours.
We smiled and decided that some young student was practicing for a college play.

With much patience and kindness, he led an elderly lady who was blind ― and obviously delighted with his oratory.
She was using a walker which he held as he struggled to help her into her coat.
We watched as he escorted the smiling woman out like a knight with his lady.
My mother-in-law broke our reverie by saying, "We have just seen a son who loves his mother."
What a lesson for all of us about how to treat others, especially those who require extra patience and care.

The ability to concentrate and to use your time well is everything if you want to succeed in business―or almost anywhere else, for that matter.
Ever since college I've always worked hard during the week while trying to keep my weekends free for family and recreation.
Except for periods of real crisis I've never worked on Friday night, Saturday, or Sunday.
Every Sunday night I get the adrenaline going again by making an outline of what I want to accomplish during the upcoming week.
It's essentially the same schedule I developed at Lehigh.

If you want to make good use of your time, you've got to know what's most important and then give it all you've got.
That's another lesson I learned at Lehigh.
I might have had five classes the next day, including an oral quiz where I didn't want to look stupid, so I had to prepare.
Anyone who wants to become a problem-solver in business has to learn fairly early how to establish priorities.
Of course, the time frame is a little different.
In college I had to figure out what I could accomplish in one evening.
In business the time frame is more like three months to three years.

We have two daughters, five years apart.
We did not put aside money for their college education because we were pretty well set and didn't think it would be necessary.
Luckily, we were right.

Daughter No. 1 was a good student and wanted to continue her education.
We paid her college tuition and gave her a monthly stipend.

Daughter No. 2 was not interested in college.
She chose to get married right after high school.
We gave her a car in her senior year and paid for a beautiful wedding.

Shortly after Daughter No. 2 returned from her honeymoon, she asked for the same amount of money we had spent on her sister's education.
My husband told her he would have sent her to college had she chosen to go, but we could not give her that much money.
I've felt bad about this for a long time because I'm afraid she feels we favored her older sister.

"There are two things in Japan that determine one's life," explains Taizo Kato, a professor of sociology at Waseda University.
"One is marriage and the other is the college entrance examination."
Passing is everything.
A good score justifies the nearly round-the-clock routine of study that begins in grade school; the result is a ticket into the highest levels of industry, finance or government.
Failure spells abject humiliation for the family and the likelihood of a dismal career.
(College itself is often just a playful respite between the rigors of high school and the working world.)

A few years ago, when I was back in Kansas, I gave a talk at my old college.
It was open to the public, and afterward a very old man came up to me and asked me if my maiden name had been Wemyss.
I said yes, thinking he might have known my father or my grandfather. But no.
"When I was young," he said, "I once worked for your great-grandfather, Robert Wemyss, when he had the sheep ranch here."
I think that was a moment when I realized all over again something of great importance to me.

Schools and colleges have a strong influence on the future of society, because they educate the next generation.

Yet Americans have many different ideas about how young people should be educated.

Consequently, there are almost as many kinds of schools and colleges as there are theories of education.
Today there is a great deal of controversy about American education.

I would not be thought for one moment to set little store by the educational value of women's colleges today.
Large masses of girls from widely different homes can do a world of good to each other, and it does a girl no harm to be exposed to excellence for four years.
Nor would I dare to deny the usefulness of examinations.

I also blame them for my college education.
They worked hard to support me and pay my way.

College or university study is known as 'higher education.'
Higher education in the U.S. is for average citizens as well as the leaders of the community.
The opportunity to study beyond secondary school is available to nearly all qualified students; and because there are so many state-supported schools in the U.S., even those U.S. students with limited finances usually can obtain some higher education.

The truth is this: men quote proverbs the better to express themselves.
Proverbs are the wit of the inarticulate.
Proverbs are the gospel of the poor.
Folk sayings are the college of the masses.

Although Asian-Americans make up only 2.1 percent of the population, you wouldn't know that from looking at the nation's best colleges.

Vice President Hubert Humphrey, addressing a group of educators in Washington not
long age, outlined in some detail his own teaching experience, which includes a
short stint as associate professor of political science at a Minnesota college.
"I mention my teaching background," Humphrey said,"because, considering the
precarious future of public office, I thought you might like to look me over."

College students would be better prepared for independent thinking if there were
less emphasis on conformity in high school.

I have no patience with the college graduate who whines that his diploma doesn't
help him get ahead in business. And less patience with the college graduate who tries
to prove that it does.

To advance in knowledge one must forever learn more, study more, reason more.
Reading helps accomplish this; in college about eighty-five percent of all
study involves reading.

College graduates with active interest in the arts proved more creative than
those who had no interest in the arts.

A central belief of the middle class in which I grew up was that the son
of a ditichdigger could become a college president, whereas the careless son of
the top family in town could easily make mistakes from which he would not
recover. These twin beliefs were not legendary;each year they were illustrated
by specific lives in our community, and are still being illustrated.

Although municipal workers were building a number of speed breakers on
our neighborhood roads, nothing was being constructed on one long straight
stretch. When I asked a municipal official the reason, he pointed to
a girl's college alongside. "That's the best speed breaker!" he said.
And, sure enough, drivers were slowing down to watch the students.
