사람에 관해서 쓰이는 경우에는 사람을 수동적인 물건으로 보는 데서 흔히 치욕적인 의미를 갖고 있고 이기적이고 흉한 뜻을 암시한다.

We are less credulous than we were. In the nineteenth century, a novelist
would bring his story to a conclusion by presenting his readers with a
series of coincidences―most of them wildly improbable.
Readers happily accepted the fact that an obscure maid-servant was really
the hero's mother. A long-lost brother, who was presumed dead, was really
alive all the time and wickedly plotting to bring about the hero's downfall.
And so on. Modern readers would find such naive solutions totally
unacceptable. Yet, in real life, circumstances do sometimes conspire to
bring about coincidences which anyone but a nineteenth century novelist
would find incredible.
현대인들은 어떤 사실을 쉽게 믿으려 하지 않는다. 19세기 소설가들은 독자들에게
터무니없는 우연의 일치들을 제시하면서 이야기의 결말을 짓곤 했다.
이름 없는 하녀가 사실은 주인공의 어머니였다는 사실을 독자들은 기꺼이
받아들였다. 오래 전에 죽었다고 여겨졌던 형이 사실은 살아있었고 주인공을
멸망시키려는 사악한 음모를 꾸미고 있었다. 이와 비슷한 이야기는 많다.
현대의 독자들은 그런 순진한 처리를 그대로로 받아들이려 하지 않는다.
그러나 실제 현실에서 여러 상황들이 결합하여 19세기 소설가가 아니면
믿을 수 없는 우연의 일치들이 종종 벌어진다.
During the summer in Nova Sotia, moths known locally as "millers" cluster
around outdoor lights. At my cottage one weekend, my friend Theresa and
I were becoming annoyed at the number of insects the kids were letting inside.
When we heard our husbands' footsteps on the porch, Theresa called out
sharply: "Get in quick and close the door! Those darn millers will come
in, and we won't be able to get rid of them."
As she spoke, our husbands entered, followed by four people she had never
met. There was an awkward silence until one of the visitors exclaimed,
"Too late! We're already in."
Theresa was introduced to Bruce Miller, his brother Lee, Bruce's
stepdaughter, Denice, and her fiance, Wayne Miller.

Once upon a time there was an island called Lombok. On the island lived
a girl named Munira and her big brother Amin, the fisherman. "There
aren't any more fish around here, Munira," said Amin one day. "They've

"Of course," answered Munira. "I'll put a lamp in the window every night
for you to come home by." Amin didn't come back that night. Nor the next
night, nor the next. For years, Munira lived on the seashells she
gathered on the beach during the day. She waited by the window with her
lamp at night. The other people of Lombok moved away, one by one. Soon,
Munira was alone. One day Munira's cousin, Zeinab, came to visit her
from the big city. "Come to the city and live with me!" said Zeinab. "I
can't," said Munira. "I can't let the lamp go out." The next night there
was a terrible storm. In the morning, Munira walked along the beach
looking for seashells. Suddenly, she saw her lost brother Amin! He was

Robert's friends made fun of him because he could not ride a bike. So,

Robert got up and tried again. The same thing happened again and again,
which hurt him. However, Robert kept trying and finally learned to ride a

Do you have a little brother or sister who listens to commercials on
television and then tries to get your mother to buy every product he or
she has seen advertised? Sometimes little children are so "sold" by
commercials that they really believe their family must eat only one kind
of cereal or use a certain brand of soap. Advertisers change people's
thinking by using language which appeals to emotions. This is an example
of the power of language.
