Every bird is covered with feathers.
Feathers help the birds fly and help them hide from their enemies.
they also keep the birds warm when they swim or when it rains.
These feathers are called down and are found underneath other feathers.
Some baby birds are covered with down when they are born.
Other feathers are like those on sparrows.
They help sparrows hide in trees, bushes, and grass.

How do birds know when to fly south?
Some people think it's cool weather that tells them to leave.
But other don't believe this is true.
They think the birds start to migrate when the fall days grow shorter.
Some birds migrate only short distances.
Others fly thousands of miles.
And the birds don't get lost at all!

Because of my job, I was only able to sail during summer vacations,
so the trip around the world had to be broken up into small pieces.
The first section was from New York to Bermuda.
From there, I went to Venezuela, then to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti.
I wandered all through the South Pacific, stopping for long visits in Fiji.
Occasionally, I would be joined by friends.
But most of the time, my only companions were dolphins and flying fish.
Sometimes a bird would stop by to hitchhike or for a little rest.

The arctic tern is an extraordinary bird that makes difficult journeys.
It flies up to 35,000 kilometers every year―all around the world from the North Pole to the South Pole and back again!
That's more than any other animal.
Arctic terns fly through all types of weather, using the sun and stars to help them.
They spend almost all of their life in the air.
When they need food, they catch fish from the sea.
Some arctic terns live thirty years or more―so they travel over one million kilometers in their lifetime.
The bird is only thirty-eight centimeters long and weighs around 300 grams.

When we hear about wetlands such as swamps and bogs, we are often reminded of unpleasant experiences:
we get swamped with homework and bogged down in math problems.
This makes it hard to realize the importance of wetlands.
Wetlands are important to many kinds of animals and plants that live there.
Some birds nest in wetlands and others use them for rest stops during flights.
Wetlands are important to people, too.
People visit wetlands to fish, take pictures and just listen to the sounds and enjoy being outdoors.
Wetlands also help us in other ways.
They control flooding by soaking up water like a sponge and then letting it out later on.

The boomerang, a light, thin, and well-balanced missile, was the very first Australian invention.
It could be thrown into the air to imitate a hawk, causing birds to get frightened and fly into nets where they were caught.
However, boomerangs were mostly used in competitions between native tribes.
The idea was to see who could make the boomerang do the most circles in flight before it returned to the thrower's feet.
Today the boomerang is used by college lecturers to demonstrate the principles of aerodynamics.

According to a recent scientific study, geese fly in a “V” formation to conserve energy.
This is the same principle that bicyclists use in the Tour De France.
It's called “drafting”―the geese use the air currents created by the birds in front of them to fly more efficiently.
The aerodynamic “V” shape reduces the air resistance, which lets the geese fly much farther.
And since the bird at the front of the “V” encounters the most wind resistance, they all take turns at that position.

Eagles, soaring high and fearless, have always made people think of strength, freedom, and courage.
For this reason, countries, empires, and rulers from ancient Egypt up to the modern United States have made eagles their symbol.
Most Americans have seen enough pictures and emblems to recognize an eagle.
Surprisingly, few know much about the bird.
Even people who study birds, do not know a great deal.
It is difficult to study the eagle's habits because it is dangerous and fierce.
Also, it nests high up in trees or on cliffs which are difficult to reach.

While shopping malls have changed our lives, not all of their effects have been positive.
Most of the shops and services found in malls are parts of large corporations.
These businesses have taken away customers from smaller shops in the area and forced them to close.
That has meant fewer individually-owned businesses and less local control over jobs.
Malls have sometimes been built on land that is important for the survival of birds and wild animals.
Wherever they are built, they cover large areas with buildings and parking lots, instead of trees or grass.
Thus, they contribute to the general loss of nature.

The whole day was a blaze of sunshine.
The ghostly winter silence had given way to the great spring murmur of awakening life.
This murmur arose from all the land, filled with the joy of living.
It came from the things that lived and moved again, things which had not moved during the long months of frost.
The willows were bursting out in young buds.
Shrubs and vines were putting on fresh clothes of green.
Woodpeckers were booming and knocking in the forest.
Squirrels were chattering and birds were singing.

Migration probably attracted the attention and aroused the imagination of humans.
Recorded observations on this date back nearly 3,000 years to the times of Hesiod, Homer, Herodotus, and Aristotle.
Aristotle, naturalist and philosopher of ancient Greece, was one of the first observers whose writings are known to discuss it.
He noted cranes traveled from the steppes of Scythia to the marshes at the headwaters of the Nile, and pelicans, geese, swans, doves, and many other birds likewise passed to warmer regions to spend the winter.

The chirping of birds, the squeaking of dolphins, and the dancing of bees may potentially represent systems similar to human languages.

"Talking" birds such as parrots are capable of faithfully reproducing words and phrases of human language that they have heard; but when a parrot says "Polly wants a cracker," she may really want a ham sandwich or a drink of water or nothing at all.
A bird that has learned to say "hello" or "goodbye" is as likely to use one as the other, regardless of whether people are arriving or departing.
The bird's utterances carry no meaning.

They are speaking neither English nor their own language when they sound like us.

Two explorers, camped in the heart of the African jungle, were discussing their expedition.
"I came here," said one, "because the urge to travel was in my blood.
City life bored me, and the smell of exhaust fumes on the highways made me sick.
I wanted to see the sun rise over new horizons and hear the flutter of birds that never had been seen by man; I wanted to leave my footprints on sand unmarked before I came.
In short, I wanted to see nature in the raw.
What about you?
"I came," the second man replied, "because my son was taking saxophone lessons."

Linnaeus's system of scientific classification is important for two reasons.
He was the first botanist to classify plants into groups by their parts.
He looked at the different parts of the plants and put plants with the same parts into the same group.
Second, he gave each plant two names: one name for genus and one name for species.
For example, the scientific name for the sunflower is Helianthus annuus.
Helianthus is the genus name, and annuus is the species.
The robin is a red bird.
Its scientific name is Turdus migratorius.

Turdus is the genus name, and migratorius is the species name.

One day, at a Washington Senators baseball game, someone in the large party in the
President's box ordered hot dogs and began passing them around. The President
was suddenly seen sitting doubled over, his head between his knees, wolfing down
a hot dog. Off his diet again, he was afraid that Lady Bird might be watching
the game on television and see him eating it.

Birds are particularly sensitive to weather changes, and rooks especially so. When
they build their nests higher than usual in the trees, it has often been noticed that a
warm, fairly dry summer follows. The same applies when they fly high, and the opposite
is the case if they are seen flying low.

The pet-shop customer couldn't believe his good fortune. The parrot he had
just bought could recite Shakespeare's sonnets, imitate opera stars and
intone Homer's epic poems in Greek. And he cost only $600.
Once the man got the bird home, however, not another word passed his beak.
After three weeks the disconsolate customer returned to the shop and asked
for his money back. "When we had this bird," said the proprietor, "he
could recite poetry and sing like an angel. Now you want me to take him
back when he's no longer himself? Well, all right. Out of the goodness
of my heart I'll give you $100." Reluctantly the man accepted his loss.
Just as the door shut behind him he heard the parrot say to the shop
owner, "Don't forget―my share is $250."

When I worked for a trio of attorneys, we shared a kitchen with several
other professionals in the building. Unfortunately, any food placed in
the refrigerator soon disappeared.
One Friday a turkey was delivered for an attorney who was not expected
back until the following week. Not taking any chances, I attached a
warning note to the bird.
When I opened the refrigerator on Monday, the turkey was still there
along with my message: "Do Not Touch―Evidence in a Murder Trial!"

Many observers have commented on what seems to be the fact that fear plays
a much smaller part than we should think it must in the life of an animal
which lives dangerously.
Terror he can know, and perhaps he knows it frequently.
But it seems to last only a little longer than the immediate danger it
helps him to avoid, instead of lingering, as in the human being it does,
until it becomes a burden and a threat.
The frightened bird resumes his song as soon as danger has passed, and
so does the frightened rabbit his games.
It is almost as if he knew that "cowards die many times before their
deaths: the valiant never taste of death but once."

The habit of thinking by means of comparison is a fatal one.
When anything pleasant occurs, it should be enjoyed to the full, without
stopping to think that it is not so pleasant as something else that may
possibly be happening to someone else.
"Yes," says the envious man, "this is a sunny day, and it is springtime,
and the birds are singing, but I understand that the springtime in
Sicily is a thousand times more beautiful."

would permit us to assemble a representative group of inter-

well production firm and publisher. We would also have the chance tp
discuss prospects firsthand. Thus, the Seoul venue would permit us to

no moving lights and shadows from swift passing clouds. Hour after hour,
the changeless glare of the hot sky shone upon the same object. Hour
after hour, the river rolled along, as slowly as time itself.

When I was young it seem that life were so wonderful a mircle
Oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds and trees well
they'll be singing so happily Oh joyfully Oh playfully watching me
But then they sent me away to teach me how to sensible logical
Oh responsible practical
And they showed me the world
Where I could be so defensible Oh clinical Oh intellectual

Sailing
Rod Stwert
I am sailing I am sailing
Home again 'cross the sea
I am sailing salty waters
To be near you to be free
-
I am flying I am flying
Like a bird 'cross the sky
I am flying passing high clouds
To be with you to be free
-
**
Can you hear me can you hear me
Through the dark night far away
I am dying forever crying
To be with you who can say
-
** repeat
-
We are sailing we are sailing
Home again 'cross the sea
We are sailing salty waters
To be near you to be free
Oh Lord to be near you to be free
Oh Lord to be near you to be free
Oh Lord to be near you to be free
Oh Lord...
