☞ Britain 과 England의 차이
우리나라 사람 가운데 Britain과 England를 동의어로 생각하는
사람이 많은 것 같은데, 이 두개의 지명이 가리키는 범위에는 차
이가 있습니다. 그 차이를 일으키는 것은 Wales 와 Scotland로,
이들은 England에는 포함되지 않지만 Britain에는 포함 됩니다.
즉, Britain은 England와 상기의 두 지방으로 이루어지는 큰 섬
전체를 가리키는 것이죠. Britain의 기원은 신화에 따른 것으로
Aeneas의 자손의 영웅 Brutus에서 나온 것이라고 하는데, 이는 파
리가 Troy의 왕자 Paris에서 나왔다는 것과 같은 이야기입니다.

- 언론이 어떤 개인이나 단체의 약점을 알아내고서, 이것을
세상에 공개하겠다 라고 하는 위협을 하는것 혹은 다른 이익을
노리고 이러한 약점을 보도하는 언론의 부정적인 활동을 의미
한다. 이와 비슷한 것으로
BLACKMAIL이란게 있는데 악랄한 세금이란 뜻이다.
여기서 black은 악의에 찬, 악랄한이란 뜻이고, mail은 우편물
이란 뜻도 있지만 지불, 세금(= tax, payment)란 뜻도 있다.
이말은 England와 Scotland의 경계에 사는 소농민들에게
신변보호를 구실로 삼아서 도둑떼들이 강제로 곡식과 재산을
포탈해가던 악습에서 비롯된 말이다.
그후 이말은 점차 확대되어 못된 관리, 비평가, 신문기자등이
취약점을 가진 사람들을 협박, 공갈해서 뜯어가는 돈을 의미하게
되었다.
blackmail이 동사로도 사용되
A few years ago, when I was back in Kansas, I gave a talk at my old college.

그 노인은 "젊었을 때 나는 댁의 증조부이신 Robert Wemyss씨를 위해 일을 한 적이 있었다오.
그때 그분께서는 양 목장을 가지고 계셨지요." 하고 말했다.
I think that was a moment when I realized all over again something of great importance to me.
