Analysts called the partnership a watershed for the PDA pioneer. Those
who predicted Palm Computing's market share would dwindle in the face of
competition from Microsoft's Windows CE, a scaled-down version of the
Windows operating system designed for use in consumer electronics, have
since changed their tune.
전문가들은 소니와 제휴함으로써 PDA 개척자인 팜 컴퓨팅에게 중요한 전기가
마련됐다고 보고 있다. 가전용으로 윈도를 개조한 MS 윈도 CE의 부상으로
팜의 OS 시장이 많이 잠식될 것으로 예상했던 사람들은 이제 그같은 시각을
바꾸고 있다.

``The Sony partnership is a broadside against an already weakened
Windows CE,'' said Tom Rhinelander, a senior analyst with Forrester
Research in Cambridge, Mass. Rhinelander thinks there's now ``no
chance'' that Microsoft will be able to catch up to Palm in the market
for PDA operating systems.
시장조사회사인 포레스터 리서치의 톰 라인랜더 선임연구원은 "이번 소니와의
제휴는 이미 약세를 보이기 시작한 윈도 CE에 옆구리를 친 것과 같다"고 잘라
말했다. 그는 이제 MS가 PDA 운영체제시장에서 팜을 따라잡을 기회는 없을 것
이라고 주장했다.

Palm computing's market share for the operating system in of PDAs --
electronic organizers that fit in your pocket and share information with
your personal computer -- was expected to peak at 79.7 percent at the
end of this year, according to International Data Corp. Over the same
period, Microsoft's Windows CE was projected to rise to 12.6 percent.
시장조사회사 IDC는 팜 컴퓨팅의 PDA(PC와 정보를 공유하는 포켓에 쏙 들
어가는 전자 오거나이저) 운영체제시장 점유율은 이번 연말에 최고 절정에
달해 79.7 %에 이를 것으로 예측할 정도다. MS의 윈도 CE는 점유율이
12.6%로 확대될 것으로 예상된다.
