The Big

"The Fun City"

New York City is a polyglot community because of the thousands of immigrants who settle there.

On the streets of New York the homeless live in abject poverty, huddling in doorways to find shelter from the wind.

We can never forget the sight of those stately sailing ships, with their lofty masts and beautiful lines as they entered New York harbor on July 4, 1976.

With a population made up of people from many different lands, New York City is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

I will never forget being in the “big blackout” of November 9, 1965.
With no electric lights, candles were in great demand.
An announcer on a New York radio station that stayed on the air because it had auxiliary power reported,
“An interesting drama is being unfolded on our streets.
The price of candles in many stores has doubled.
On the other hand, some good-hearted merchants are offering their candles at half price, or even giving them away.”

The Apollo Theater, the Harlem landmark in New York, has been a major showcase for top black entertainers since the 1930s.
Built in 1913, it began as a comedy house where blacks weren't allowed as an audience.
But in 1920 it was offering shows that usually included Jazz and in 1932 it became a black comedy house.
It wasn't until renovations were made in the mid-1930s that the Apollo became a world-renewed place for Jazz musicians.
Recently the Apollo has been operating as a nonprofit performance center.

Because of my job, I was only able to sail during summer vacations,
so the trip around the world had to be broken up into small pieces.
The first section was from New York to Bermuda.
From there, I went to Venezuela, then to the Galapagos Islands and Tahiti.
I wandered all through the South Pacific, stopping for long visits in Fiji.
Occasionally, I would be joined by friends.
But most of the time, my only companions were dolphins and flying fish.
Sometimes a bird would stop by to hitchhike or for a little rest.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the rich of New York were deeply impressed by the parks in Europe and suggested establishing a park.
The 843-acre land made of marsh and gravel, which was hard to develop as land for housing, was purchased to be designed as a park.
Full-scale construction began after kicking the poor residents out to other regions.
In the respect that the United States adopted many ideas from Europe for development, the history of Central Park is that of the United States.

You'll find the unknown word comes again, perhaps several times, and by the end of the chapter you'll have guessed its meaning.
That's how we learn the meaning of words in our own language, isn't it?
When I'm telling a story to children, they seldom stop to ask what a word means.
Even when they read, they don't run for the dictionary every time they see an unknown word.
When I read my New York Times these days I often find articles about space programs.
There are sometimes words I don't know ―and some of them are so new that they're not yet in the dictionaries.
But I'm slowly beginning to understand what some of the words mean ― simply by meeting them so often.

During his years as mayor of New York City, Guardia sometimes presided as judge in a night court.
In one case, a man was found guilty of stealing a loaf of bread.
He claimed that he had committed that theft to feed his starving family.
“The law is the law,” La Guardia declared.
“I must therefore fine you $10.”
When the man sadly confessed that he had no money, the judge took $10 out of his wallet and paid the fine.
He also asked each person in the courtroom to contribute 50 cents to help the man.
There and then, they accepted his request.
Finally, the law-breaker was set free and even blessed with an undeserved gift.

Reporter : How did Jack & Bill's get started?
Manager : Jack Cohen and Bill Greenfield have been friends since they were in high school.
In 1977, they decided to start an ice cream business together.
They took a $5 course to learn how to make ice cream.
Then, they opened their first ice cream shop, Jack & Bill's, in New York.
Reporter : What made Jack & Bill's such a big success?
Manager : Jack and Bill figured out the secret to making great ice cream.
They started with fresh milk and cream and added lots of natural flavorings, lots of fresh fruits, and lots of imagination.
To get people to try their product, Jack and Bill gave out free samples of ice cream everywhere they went.
Their plan worked.

John Williams is famous for his ability to write powerful and highly effective music for movies.
Mr. Williams has been writing music for movies since 1960,
but he is perhaps best known for his award-winning scores for movies such as Jaws, Star Wars, and Schindler's List.
Before he began writing music for the movies, Mr. Williams dreamed of being a concert pianist.
During the 1950s, Mr. Williams was into jazz and he worked in New York with many jazz artists.
Later, he moved to Los Angeles and got a job writing music for television shows.
It was this television job which led him into movies.

She was born in England in 1821, and emigrated to New York City.
One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor.
That was almost impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century.
After writing many letters seeking admission to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a medical school in Philadelphia.
After graduating from the medical school in 1849, she wanted to become a surgeon.
Unfortunately a serious eye infection forced her to abandon the idea.
She found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman.
In 1857 she and her sister, also a doctor, along with another female doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children.
Besides being the first female doctor and founding her own hospital, she also established the first medical school for women.

The lasting fascination of the Robinson Crusoe myth is due to its attempt to imagine an individual independent of society.
The attempt breaks down.
Robinson is not an abstract individual, but an Englishman from York; he carries his Bible with him and prays to his tribal God.
The myth quickly bestows on him his Man Friday; and the building of a new society begins.

After airport officials told her father that there was no way his daughter would be permitted to leave the country, he called the State Department in Washington.
He reached David Gooding, who abandoned his own weekend plans and spent the next several hours working with the airline to permit the girl to depart while the passport issue was being resolved.

She was on a flight that night.

Unfortunately, the first option on the publication rights is already
with another American publisher and during my visit to New York last
month we reached a preliminary understanding that the option would be
taken up and the company in question would be publishing an edition in
the United States.

Our New york branch is near the Pan American Building.

The other day something horrible happened in a New York suburb.

How long long did it take?
Only an hour.
Well, that's not long.
No. But we had to wait half an hour to land.
Why?
There was a lot of air traffic.
Oh, yes. D.C. is a busy airport.
I took the shuttle from the New York to D.C.
Was it hard to get a seat?
That's faster than the train.
When's the next shuttle to New York?
It leaves in an hour.
I can get a shuttle from Boston to Pittsburgh.

How much is the fare into New York?
Round trip is ten dollars and fifty cents.

What's the time difference between Seoul and New York?

There are many tall skyscrapers in New York.

In New York, there are as many rich people as poor people.

My passion for books continued throughout my life. It had to meet a big
challenge when, at the age of twenty-five, I moved to New York. Because I
had almost no money. I was forced to leave all my books in Brazil.
Besides, I didn't know enough English to read. For some years I had to
live without books, my lovers. But my love for books was so strong that I
overcame even this obstacle. I learned to read in English and was finally
able to enjoy my favorite authors again.

Suppose a football game begins at 1:00 p.m. in New York. It is then 6:00
p.m. in London. Which time is correct? if an explosion occurred on a
star, scientists on the earth would record the time it happened. But
anyone traveling in another part of the universe in a different direction
would identify the time differently. Thus there is no absolute time.
