같은 콩깍지(pod)에 들어 있는 두 개의 완두콩(pea)이니까 '꼭 닮은'

여기서 mice는 mouse의 복수형인 것 아시죠.

앞 글자(initial)를 따서 U.S.라고 물자마다 찍었다나요.
그래서 Uncle Sam이 미국을 나타내게 되었답니다.
Sam은 Samuel의 애칭입니다.
Jolly Roger를 보신 적이 있습니까?
해골바가지 밑에 X자가 적힌 해적기(blackflag)를 나타냅니다.
참고로 jolly는 '즐거운'의 의미죠.
비행사의 교신에서 보면 말끝에 ROGER라고 하죠.
이 말은 " 상대방의 이야기를 잘 받았다"는 것인데 이때
R은 received의 첫자(initial)입니다.

그러고 보니 Harry만 안했네요.
Harry는 당연히 Tom, Dick처럼 '아무개'라는 의미를 가집니다.
그리고 참 악마(devil)라는 의미도 있답니다. Old Harry는 악마
harry가 동사로 쓰이면 괴롭히다, 약탈하다, 자주 공격하다

있다는 걸 기억하시길.. 성경에서 Tom(도마)은 예수의 제자였는데
의심이 많아서 자신의 눈으로 보지 않고서는 예수의 부활을 믿으려 하
지 않았다고 합니다.

- 어린이들 놀이의 일종입니다. (아이들끼리 각각 고양이와 쥐의 역할을
맡아 고 기는 형태의 놀이라고 할 수 있겠죠.)
cf> " play cat and mouse with " 가 되면 (with) ① ② 두가지 뜻이 있다.
① 고양이가 쥐를 을때 놓아주는척 하다가 다시 잡고 이를 반복하는
형태의 놀이

1) '살고있다' is living 이 아니라 live 만으로 좋습니다.

※ I live with my parents. 는 경우에 따라서는 '부모와

진행중의 동작이므로 I write 가 아니라 I am writing.
'미국의 아저씨'는 my uncle in America (of는 잘못입니다.)
☞ I am writing (a letter) to my uncle in America.
(참고) '쓴다'고 하면 대개 편지를 말하므로 letter는
흔히 생략됩니다.
ex) He often writes to me.

【2】 hard to swallow : 믿기 어렵다.
아시다시피 swallow는 "꿀꺽 삼키다"의 의미. 남의 말을 꿀꺽삼
키는 모습을 상상한다면.. 이말이 「의심없이 곧이곧대로 듣다」
의 의미가 되는 데는 별 무리가 없는거 같다.
swallow와 관련된 속어로는 다음의 것들도 있다.
swallow a watermelon seed : 임신하게 되다.
swallow the dictionary : 엄청난 어휘를 습득하다.
위의 속어들은 쉽게 유추가 가능할 것이므로 언급은 생략한다.
Ex) Your story is pretty hard to swallow, but I am beginning
to believe it.
The news was hard to swallow.
