공직에 있었지만 사람들로부터 사랑을 받을 수 있는 인간성을 잃지 않았고,
내 생각에 네루에게는 추호도 거만하거나, 잘난체하거나, 자의식이 강하지
않았다. 그는 젊은 시절의 자연스러움과 명랑함을 지니고있었다. 수년 동안
드물게 무거운 공직의 부담을 지니고온 뒤에도. 만년에 가서야 인도와 중국

It is evident that no professional writer can afford only to write when he
feels like it. If he waits till he is in the mood, till he has the
inspiration as he says, he waits indefinitely and ends by producing
little or nothing. The professional writer creates the mood.

a habit, and like the old actor in retirement, who gets restless when

and make up for the evening performance, the writer itches to get to his

공손하게 질문할 때 쓰인다. 간단히 질문할 때는 Where is the police

Would you tell me where the post office is?라
고 좀더 공손하게 물을 수 있다.
여기서 먼가요?는 Is it far from here?이고, 가까이 있나요?는 Is it near
here?라고 말한다. 똑바로 가세요는 Go straight, 계속 가세요?는 Keep
going, 두 구간을 가세요는 Go two blocks=Go for two blocks라고 말한다.

Would you...?와 Could you...?는 Will you...?나 Can you...?보다 더욱 공손한
표현이다. 가령, 서문시장이 어디에 있는지 물을 때에는 Could you tell me
where Seomoon Market is?로 말한다. 길 안내할 때에는 Please를 붙여서
말할 필요가 없다.
간단히 Go that way. Come this way. It's hat way. 등으로 말한다.

1960년 대에 많은 사람들의 인기를 한몸에 받고 있던 쿠바출신
권투선수 Benny Perat는 어느날 시합 도중 불의의 일격을 맞고
쓰러져 병원으로 후송되었으나 결국 죽고 말았다.

이 사건은 당시 인기절정의 스포츠였던 권투 경기의 위험성에
대해 일반인들의 인식을 새롭게 해주었을 뿐만 아니라 생활을
꾸려나가기 위해 여러가지 어려운 직업에 종사하며 힘든 삶을
영위하고 있는 New York을 비롯한 대도시 빈민계층의 처절한
삶의 한 단면을 보여주는 것이기도 했다.

원래 clearing은 고층건물들 사이에 있는 빈 공간 (vacant spot)을
의미하는 말이지만 이 노래에서는 홀로 외로운 싸움을 하고 있는 주
인공이 서있는 '사각의 링' 한가운데라고 보는 것이 타당하다.
＊ a fighter by his trade
trade는 '직업(occupation)'이라는 의미로도 자주 쓰이는 말이다.
He follows the trade of fiction.
(그는 소설을 쓰는 것을 직업으로 하고 있다.)
I'm a fixer by trade.(제 직업은 수리공입니다.)
여기에서는 a boxer 를 다시 한번 풀어 쓴 것으로 '다시 말해 싸우는
것을 직업으로 갖고 있는' 정도의 의미가된다.
＊ reminders of every glove - 그를 때려눕히고,그가 너무 아파서 고함
을 지를 때까지 그를 흠씬 두들겨 패주었던 권투글러브에 의한 상처
＊ But the fighter still remains - 때로는 이런 비참한 생활을 청산하
고 싶지만 결국엔 생활을 영위하기 위해 남아 있게 된다는 의미.
＊ I have squandered ......mumbles - 별로 중요하지 않은 것들을 위해
기력을 낭비해 왔다. squander 하면 '~을 낭비하다(waste)'라는 말인
데 이 노래에 나오는 mumbles(의미없이 중얼거리는 말), 즉 확실하지
않은 한줌의 공허한 말들만 믿고 링 위에서 저항하며 싸워왔다는 뜻
이다.
＊ for a pocketful... 의 for는 in exchange for (~과 교환하여) 정도
의 의미로 볼 수 있다.
＊ Such are......jest - 앞 문장의 mumbles의 내용을 설명하는 말이다.
싸우고 있는 선수들을 북돋아 주기 위한 각가지 약속들(promises),
예를 들면 시합에서 이기면 어떤 보상을 해줄 것이라는 등. 그 중에
는 거짓말(lie)도 있고 그냥 농담삼아 지껄인 말(jest)도 있었을 것
이다.
＊ Still, a man......rest -그럼에도불구하고(still) 이 권투선수는
자기 귀에 달콤하게 들리는 말은 믿고 다른 말들은 무시해버린다는
의미. 이 노래를 만든 Paul Simon은 he 대신 'a man'이라는 표현을
씀으로써 단지 이 권투선수 뿐만이 아니라 인간들 모두가 이러한 단
순한 속성을 가지고 있음을 간접적으로 묘사하고 있다.
＊ In the company of strangers - 낯선 사람들과 함께 있다, 즉 편안치
못한 분위기 (the atmosphere is uncomfortable).
＊ running scared - (흔히 죄를 짓거나 잘못을 한 후)겁에 질린.
When a man does something wrong and can't take responsibility,
all he can do is running scared. (어떤 사람이건 간에 뭔가 잘못
을 하고 책임을 질 수 없게 되면 두려움 속에 떠는 길 밖에는 없을
것이다.)
＊ laying low - (눈에 뜨이지 않게) 움추리고 있는.
(being inconspicuous).
＊ poorer quarter - 빈민가.
＊ get no offers - (일자리를 수소문 해보았지만) 어느 곳에서도 오라
는 데가 없었다.
＊ "come on"......Avenue - 뉴욕시의 7번가는 Brooklyn 근처에 있는 홍
등가 (red light district)를 말하는데 여기에서의 "come on"은 매춘
부(whores)가 손님들을 유혹할 때 쓰는 말이다. 이들은 흔히 다음과
같은 말로서 사람들을 유인하기 마련이다.
" Hi baby, are you looking for something? Can I help you? Come
on,baby! "
