till이 더 오래된 형태, 이것을 ‘till, 'til로 철자하는 것은 비표준어이다. 어느 말이나 전치사로 쓰여서, Wait till tomorrow처럼 할 수도 있고, 절을 도입하는 접속사로, A son's a son till he takes a wife처럼 할 수도 있다. 대체로 until은 글머리에, till은 주절 다음에 오는 종속절에 흔히 쓰인다.
Until he went to college, he never had thought of his speech./ He had never thought of his speech till(or until) he went to college.
till, until이 이끄는 절은 그때가지 한 동작이나 상태가 계속되는 것을 나타낸다. 따라서 last, remain, wait 따위 계속을 의미하는 동사와 흔히 어울려 쓰인다. 주절의 동사는 어떤 시제든지 취할 수 있다. 미래의 일에 관해서 말할 때, 종속절의 동사는 현재 또는 현재완료를 취해서 ‘비가 그칠 때까지 기다려라’는 Wait till the rain stops 혹은, Wait till the rain has stopped라고도 할 수 있다. 따라서 과거의 일에 관해서 말할 때에는 종속절의 동사는 과거 또는 과거 완료 시제를 취해서, ‘그는 비가 그칠 때까지 기다렸다’는 He waited till the rain stopped 또는 He waited till the rain had stopped라고 할 수 있다. till(또는 until)은 He did not learn of it till the next day(다음 날에 가서야 그 일을 알았다)에서처럼 부정적 구문에 쓰이기도 한다. 이 구문에서 계속되는 것은 부정의 상태 즉, he did not learn이다. 그러나 It was not long till we realized(오래지 않아 우리는 깨달았다) 같은 글은 이렇게 설명할 수 없다. 여기서 주절 it was not long은 계속하는 것으로 생각되는 문장을 만들지 못한다. 이 경우 영국에서는 till(또는 until)의 그릇된 용법으로 치지만, 미국에서는 확대된 용법으로 인정하고 있다. 이 점에 관해서 She can't go till she finishes her work와 Until injustice is ended, peace will never be realized 같은 글에서는 till, until의 용법은 표준적이지만 다음과 같은 구문에서 till, until의 사용은 가끔 나타나는 수는 있어도 격식 차리는 글에서는 before, when을 쓰는 것이 좋다.
