austere는 austeros(=dry)에서 왔다. 어원적으로는 돌능금(crab apple)같은 과일에 독특한, 수분과 단맛이 없는 데서 유래된 것이다. 지금도 때로 신맛이 나는 과일이나 포도주에 대해서 쓰이지만, 주로 사람·사람의 습관·생활양식·생활환경·예술작품 따위에 쓰인다.

이루었으나 의미는 "전혀 차이가 없는 똑같은 것(the same)"이
