7, 8월에는 해와 함께 떴다가 지기 때문에 7, 8월의
무더운 날을 dog days라 한다.
날씨가 몹시 더운 것을 우리는 가마솥에 넣고 `푹푹 찌는 것'에
비유하는데 영어는 불에 태우거나(scorch)
지글지글 볶는 것(sizzle)에 비유한다.
ex) Looks like another sizzler today. 오늘도 푹푹 찌겠군.

반대로 겨울의 몹시 추운 날씨를 freeze 또는 big chill 이라고 한다.
bundle up이란 말은 dress warmly와 같은 말로써 `옷을 두둑히 입다.'는 뜻.

cheap의 세가지 뜻.
* Cheap watch! 라고 하면 '시계가 싸다'라고 들리지 않고
'싸구려 시계' 즉 '품질이 좋지 않은 시계'로 들린다.
cheap은 '값이 싸다'란 뜻도 되지만 '싸구려' 또는 '저질이다.'
라는 뜻도 되기 때문이다. 그리고 '짜다' 즉 '구두쇠'라는 뜻도 있다.
ex) He is so cheap that he never gives a penny to charities.
'그는 어찌나 구두쇠인지 자선단체에 땡전 하나도 기부하지 않는다'란
말이 된다. '구두쇠'란 말에는 stingy person, miser, tightwad,
skinflint, skimper, pinchpenny등 많다.
구두쇠의 반대말, 돈을 물 쓰듯 하는 사람은 spendthrift라 하고
씀씀이가 큰 사람 즉 통이 큰 사람은 big spender라 한다.
on the cheap은 '싸게' 즉 '경제적으로'란 뜻이 된다.
ex) This book will tell you how to vacation on the cheap.
'이 책은 경제적으로 휴가를 보내는 방법을 알려 준다.' 는 말이된다.
cheap 자체가 '싸게'란 부사로 쓰이기도 한다.
ex) I had to sell my house cheap to avoid foreclosure.
'집이 은행에 넘어가는 것을 막기 위해 나는 집을 싸게 팔 수밖에 없었다.'
* stand by.
1. I stand by my statement 난 내가 한 말을(취소하지 않고)계속 주장한다.
2. We stand by our friend. 우리는 우리 친구의 말이 옳다고 생각한다.
- '누구에게 충성한다' '누구에게 의리를 지킨다' 곧 '편들다'

- 영화 촬영시 '준비하고 대기한다'는 의미에서 사용되는 용어.

* 말 많은 사람을 보고 '입 좀 닥쳐!'라고 하는 말은
shut up, shut your big mouth 또는 button your lip(입술에
단추를 달아라), zip your lip(입술에 지퍼를 달아라)등이 있다.
출세하다의 여러 가지 뜻
* succeed 즉 '성공하다'라는 말이 먼저 떠오르지만 이 말도
'출세하다'의 뜻으로 쓸 수 있다. 그러나 미국사람들이 이럴 때
흔히 쓰는 말은 make it이다. make it big이라고 하면 더욱
뜻이 강조된다. go places도 '출세(성공)하다'의 뜻으로 흔히
쓰는 말이다. 출세한 사람 즉 '거물'은 big shot, big wheel,
big fish, king pin등 여러 가지 명칭으로 불린다.
'출세가도를 달리는' 것을 on the fast track이라고 한다.

【2】 hard to swallow : 믿기 어렵다.
아시다시피 swallow는 "꿀꺽 삼키다"의 의미. 남의 말을 꿀꺽삼
키는 모습을 상상한다면.. 이말이 「의심없이 곧이곧대로 듣다」
의 의미가 되는 데는 별 무리가 없는거 같다.
swallow와 관련된 속어로는 다음의 것들도 있다.
swallow a watermelon seed : 임신하게 되다.
swallow the dictionary : 엄청난 어휘를 습득하다.
위의 속어들은 쉽게 유추가 가능할 것이므로 언급은 생략한다.
