cost는 물건·봉사 또는 무엇이거나 획득하기 위해 소비한 것을 말하는데 이를테면, 노력 따위에 지불된 금액을 말한다. 어느 물건에 대해서 사는 이가 지불한 price는 그에게는 그 물건의 cost이다. 일상용법에서 cost가 price의 대신으로 쓰이는 수가 있다.

일상 용어가 된 sport용어들.
* 권투 용어에서 hit below the belt라 하면 '벨트 밑을 친다'는
말이니까 상대방의 하복부를 때린다는 말이다. 이것은 물론 큰
반칙이다. 그래서 이것이 일상 회화에서는 '치사한 행동을 한다'는
뜻이 되었다. 그리고 throw in the towel이라 하면 towel을
링 안으로 집어 던져 시합을 중단시키는 것을 가리키는 말인데

have the inside track은 타원형 경기장에서 맨 가운데
track에 선수가 선다는 뜻이다. 맨 가운데 트랙은 물론
가장 거리가 가깝다. 그래서 일상 화화에서는 이 말이
'유리한 조건에 놓여 있다'는 뜻으로 쓰인다.

* a cut above∼ 는 '∼누구보다 한 수 위다'는 뜻으로 많이
쓰이는 말이다. above 대신에 below를 쓰면 물론 '한 수 아래다'는
뜻이 된다. I'm a cut below you라고 하면 위의 표현과 같은
의미가 된다. cut down to size란 말도 있는데 이것은 잘난 체
하는 사람의 '콧대를 꺾다' 또는 '별 것 아니라는 사실을 증명하다'는
뜻으로 흔히 쓰이는 말이다. I cut him down to size라고 하면
'내가 그 녀석의 콧대를 꺾어 놨지'란 말이 된다. 그리고
I put him in his place라고 해도 같은 말이 된다.
'난 그를 자기 자리에 앉혔다'는 말이니까 실제 자기 실력이나
지위 이상으로 뻐기는 사람을 원래 자기 위치에 놓는다.
즉, '콧대를 꺾어 놓는다' 또는 '코를 납작하게 만든다'는 뜻이 된다.

A deliberative poll involves three stages.

Northern North America is part of a larger circumpolar ecological domain
that continues across the narrow Bering Strait into Siberia and northern
