절정에 달하며 그후 저조한 시기가 따르는 경향이 있다.
또한 장기적으로 7년 주기로 창의력이 높아진다는 것을 연구가 말해주고 있다.
우리 모두에게도 주기적으로 창의력이 높을 때와 낮을 때가 있는 것 같다.
일이 '잘 풀리는 날'과 '잘 안되는 날'이 있고 시험을 잘 보는 때가 있고
못 보는 때가 있는 것도 이 때문일 것이다.

Popular music is a business as well as an art. It is a business which
thrives on change and novelty. A group arrives; it is tremendously
popular for a while; the group's records sell in the millions.
It would seem that all that is necessary is to keep on repeating the
same success by singing the same songs and making the same record
over and over again. But it doesn't really work that way.
Both as artists and as popular entertainers, the performers have to
develop and try new sounds and new tunes. When they stop developing,
they lose both their commercial and their artistic appeal.

20세기 최고의 듀오로 평가되는 Simon & Garfunkel은 Popular
Song이 단순히 통속적인 멜로디와 가사로 점철되어 있다는
일반인들의 인식을 바꾸어 놓은 음악계의 elite들이다.
이들은 각각 Queen's College와 Columbia University에서
철학박사와 문학박사 학위를 받은 재원들로써 사회성 짙은
가사를 통해 다양한 세태를 풍자, 고발하였다.
어린 시절부터 친구사이였던 이들은 Tom & Jerry라는
이름으로 음악활동을 시작, Hey Schoolgirls를 히트시켰다.
그 후 Simon & Garfunkel로 활동하면서 Sound of Silence,
Scarborough Fair, Mrs.Robinson, The Boxer, Bridge Over
Troubled Water 등 수많은 명곡들을 양산했으며 '70년 해체된후
개인적인 음악활동, 영화배우 등을 해오다가 '81년 New York의
Central Park에서 재결합해 자선공연을 가진 바 있다.
< 작품배경 >
1960년 대에 많은 사람들의 인기를 한몸에 받고 있던 쿠바출신
권투선수 Benny Perat는 어느날 시합 도중 불의의 일격을 맞고
쓰러져 병원으로 후송되었으나 결국 죽고 말았다.

이 사건은 당시 인기절정의 스포츠였던 권투 경기의 위험성에
대해 일반인들의 인식을 새롭게 해주었을 뿐만 아니라 생활을
꾸려나가기 위해 여러가지 어려운 직업에 종사하며 힘든 삶을
영위하고 있는 New York을 비롯한 대도시 빈민계층의 처절한
삶의 한 단면을 보여주는 것이기도 했다.

With the turn-of-the-century Crafts movement and the discovery of
nontraditional sources of inspiration, such as wooden African figures
and masks, there arose a new urge for hands-on, personal execution of
art and an interaction with the medium. Even as early as the 1880's and
1890's, nonconformist European artists were attempting direct carving.
By the second decade of the twentieth century, Americans ― Laurent and
Zorach most notably ― had adopted it as their primary means of working.

What we today call American folk art was, indeed, art of, by, and for
ordinary, everyday "folks" who, with increasing prosperity and leisure,

Citizens of prosperous, essentially middle-class republics ― whether
ancient Romans, seventeenth-century Dutch burghers, or
nineteenth-century Americans ― have always shown a marked taste for
portraiture. Starting in the late eighteenth century, the United States
contained increasing numbers of such people, and of the artists who
could meet their demands.

who began by sketching family members gained a local reputation and was
besieged with requests for portraits ; artists found it worth their
while to pack their paints, canvases, and brushes and to travel the
countryside, often combining house decorating with portrait painting.

Aside from perpetuating itself, the sole purpose of the American Academy
and Institute of Arts and Letters is to "foster, assist and sustain an
interest" in literature, music, and art. This it does by
enthusiastically handing out money. Annual cash awards are given to
deserving artists in various categories of creativity: architecture,
musical composition, theater, novels, serious poetry, light verse,
painting, sculpture. One award subsidizes a promising American writer's
visit to Rome. There is even an award for a very good work of fiction
that failed commercially ― once won by the young John Updike for the
Poorhouse Fair and, more recently, by Alice Walker for In Love and
Trouble.

Academy and Institute are not eligible for any cash prizes. Another

Albert Einstein once attributed the creativity of a famous scientist to
the fact that he “never went to school, and therefore preserved the
rare gift of thinking freely.” There is undoubtedly criticism in
Einstein's observation; many artists and geniuses seem to view their
schooling as a disadvantage. But such a truth is not a criticism of
schools. It is the function of schools to civilize, not to train
explores. The explorer is always a lonely individual whether his or her
pioneering be in art, music, science, or technology.

The pluralistic vision of the human aspiration to live a good life must
not be interpreted on the model of there being a common destination that
we may reach in different ways. The notion of a common destination is
itself deeply at odds with pluralism. If a metaphor is wanted, artistic
creation is perhaps less unsatisfactory than others. We make our lives
the way artists make works of art. We and artists start from some
context, some tradition, some educa- tional influences on us; we are
limited by what we bring to it by way of talents, imagination, and
skill, as well as by the available possibilities and by the demands and
expectations of other people in our context; and then we do what we can,
and we succeed, fail, or banally fall somewhere in between. But the
product, the life or the work of art, is going to be different in each
case, because the contributions made to it by the tradition, by our
individuality, and by the mixture we concoct of the two are also
different.
