Anther medical technique that has recently become popular is hypnosis. In
sleep, a loss of awareness occours; in hypnosis there is a highly concentrated
but relaxed awareness, which cna be like daydreaming. When used as
"hypnoanesthesia," hypnosis does not stop the pain process; rahter, the
perception of the pain is altered. Only patients who are able to undergo deep
hypnosis, about very ill patients with relief they can olonger obtain from drugs
or surgery.
최근에 일반화된 또 하나의 의료기술은 최면술이다. 수면시에는 의식이 없어지나,
최면상태에서는 고도로 집중되어 있지만 긴장이 풀린 의식이 있는데, 이것은 백일몽
상태와 흡사할 수 있다. 이른바 "최면마취법"으로 사용될 때, 최면이 고통 (과정)을
중지해 주는 것이라기 보다는, 고통에 대한 지각이 달라진다. 깊은 최면에 빠질 수
있는 환자들만이, 이것은 우리나라 인구의 약 4분의 1에 해당되는데, 외과수술을 받을
때에 이 방법이 적합하다. 최면은 흔히 중병환자들에게 약물이나 수술로부터 얻을 수
없는 진통을 제공해 준다.
